About the Mendon Carnival

The Mendon Fire Department Carnival is a hallmark summer tradition in the town of Mendon, New York. Since its inception in 1936, the event has served as both the all volunteer department’s primary fundraiser and a central social gathering for the community.

Tradition and History

  • Legacy: The carnival began just four years after the Mendon Fire Company was officially organized in 1932. It was originally held on grounds adjacent to the old Grange Hall.
  • The “Kick-off” to Summer: For decades, it has been known as one of the first major festivals of the season in the Rochester area. 
  • Community Roots: The event celebrates the department’s history, which traces back to 1914 when local women first raised funds to buy firefighting equipment for the hamlet.

The carnival spans three days at the end of May, is a family-friendly event and features several signature attractions:

  • Family-friendly event attracting over 8,000 people over the 3 days
  • Free parking, free entry and free music
  • Beer and music tent with live music performances from local bands each night.
  • Classic Fair Fare: The “Firemen’s Kitchen” is famous for local favorites, including steamed clams, salt potatoes, hot dogs, burgers, garbage plates, pulled pork, mac & cheese carnival fries and many more classic carnival food offerings.
  • Fireworks: A spectacular display lights up the sky on Thursday night.
  • Amusements: The grounds feature midway rides and skill games
  • The Fireman’s Parade: Held on Saturday, this is one of the largest parades in the region, featuring departments from across Monroe and Livingston counties, marching bands, and local organizations.
